How do I join the Motor City Optimists?

Please fill out the interest survey on our front page to express your interest in becoming a marching member, an essential and dedicated member of our volunteer team, or in lending your expertise as a potential staff member.

Once you have completed your interest survey we will be in touch with you shortly to get you on the road to becoming an Optimist.

Are you affiliated with DCI?

We are not a currently DCI-affiliated performing ensemble but hope to be able to take on their Open Class tour in a few years’ time. We are forming a SoundSport group which will allow us to essentially a group of any size and instrumentation. This will allow us to firmly establish ourselves, building a strong foundation so that we will be ready to take on a half or full summer tour as an Open Class drum & bugle corps in a few years’ time.

What will be the membership / tuition cost to be a part of the Motor City Optimists?

We anticipate that the final cost will be a few hundred dollars for each member to participate. Currently we are working to pull together funding, which will ultimately determine final costs. One of the goals of SoundSport is to keep organizational and participation costs low. This will enable us to ask for a much smaller contribution from participants than other groups may need to request. While our tuition costs will be low to begin with, for those members and families that are struggling we are confident that we can work together on a case-by-case basis to create a payment plan that suits your needs.

Are instruments provided?

We are working hard currently to secure funding so that we can have our own set of instruments in order to provide them to members. That, unfortunately, may not be the case for every instrument our first summer (2019) It is our intention to secure the larger and harder-to-borrow instruments (i.e. percussion and contras/tubas) before trumpets etc., but more details will be available at our upcoming informational meeting.

When is your first meeting / rehearsal / etc.?

Stay tuned for the details – please follow us on Facebook to stay updated! We plan to have our first open house / informational meeting, open to the public, in 2019.

What will be the rehearsal schedule?

It is our intention to have weekend rehearsals, once monthly, early in the year. For the months of May through August we will move to twice monthly rehearsals, with additional rehearsals scheduled as needed.

What will the performance schedule look like?

We will be performing for both SoundSport’s Virtual Performances and Live Competitive Events across the country. Also, we will perform at various local community events as opportunities present themselves. Using the 2018 DCI summer schedule as an example, we would, as a group, possibly travel to perform in Allentown, PA, Orlando, FL, and the SoundSport International Music & Food Festival in Indianapolis, IN (think finals / last big performance). Naturally, all of this is ultimately dependant upon the funding that we are able to secure.

Why the name Optimists?

We selected the name Optimists to honor the people of Detroit and the surrounding metropolitan area. Detroit, widely known by the moniker “America’s Comeback City”, has battled the misperceptions of outsiders with a cooperative spirit and commitment, continuously evolving and growing, moving forward with purpose, grit, resilience, pride, and determination. Possessing world class talent, they continually raise the bar, always looking forward, dreaming of and creating a community with a sense of family. A place that feels like home. Metro Detroiters are rewriting their own story. They personify the ideals and values that we as an organization strive to teach our members – teamwork, leadership, perseverance, and goal-setting, among others. Being involved allows all of our members to truly know what it means to be an Optimist.
